A 5-star book except for the fact that it's a Vook, October 17, 2011

For the most part, I find that many of the history Vooks come up short with the information they contain and the manor in which it is presented. This Vook, however, really shook me to the core.

I am not a WWII history buff, but I have always been fascinated with the great struggle and how our "Greatest Generation" sacrificed totally to ultimately end the worst threats to freedom that the world has ever known. The atrocities which took place just before and, of course, during the war years are seemingly well documented and yet, this information took me completely by surprise.

This book is well written and the photographs are astounding when viewed on sources other than the Kindle. Like all Kindle Vooks with supposed audio/video capability, the A/V doesn't work on Kindles or computers, hence my 4 star rating.

It is hard to imagine the abject terror suffered by the doomed aboard these three ships. The authors did a great job of conveying the entire scene from start to tragic finish. It is sad to think of the few who survived, spending the rest of their lives reliving the nightmare of these events and NEVER outliving the heartbreak they witnessed or the guilt of having been lucky enough to survive.

This is a devastating account of the horrors of those times which will leave you shaken to your very core. Read it and weep.

Keep in mind that you won't be able to see the video on a Kindle.

This is 1,665 locations focusing on the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, Steuben and Goya at the end of the Second World War.

As someone interested in WWII, I knew that the German evacuations as the Red Army advanced were full of horror, but this book really brings it home.

The focus is on the Wilhelm Gustloff, a ship that should have carried less than 2,000 - but actually had over 10,000 aboard when sunk by a Russian sub. The three sinkings in total led to the death of 20,000 - mostly refugees.

The images of horror as people died in the icy seas of the Baltic will leave a lasting impression on anyone who can still feel. The horror as the water plunged into the ships, the wounded soliders who shot themselves to avoid drowning, the desperate attempts to get on anything that could float, the one float full of the frozen dead.

It is correctly pointed out the survivors haven't been able to talk about what happened to them until now. It's tragic that now there are those in Germany trying to hijack their suffering for political reasons.

In the end, no one escapes war uninjured.

I got it off a friend with no instructions but it was really easy to start. I played the easy level and i thought i was going to get through it with no problems until i got to a level when i the 'thing' on the skateboard disappeared every time i tried to get a certain deck. I managed it in the end though i think this games fixed or something cos i cant find anyway to control speed and so can never get to the required deck in the given time. Its like running for the bus with a sore leg. You go slower than you think you should be able to and just as you get to the bus stop, the bus pulls out. may be good if you've got good gameboy control. but if your that much of an expert you wont want to play it.

Michael Ironside should play Sam Fisher in the movie, March 13, 2007

Fun:

PROS:
- Unreal Engine
- No forced grab cover as with many new games.
- SAVE ANYWHERE!
- Excellent main character voice acting, especially Michael Ironside. It really helps.
- Excellent music. This really helps too.
- Complicated story with interesting morality. I never understood irrational "ends-justify-the-means" ethics, which this game obviously employs, but it's certainly realistic to our ultra-nationalistic, ultra-militaristic government, so using it as a plot device in this game makes perfect sense. The enemy is mostly domestic so no one can claim anti-Arab, anti-Muslim or racism. Branching storylines and alternate endings as in a special edition DVD.
- Very very interesting psychological training levels (although this is far too brief and actually doesn't really train newbies on most weapons and gadgets).
- Sammy gotta girlfriend. Awwwww.
- Map - don't know where to go? Look at the map.
- I never once had to consult the internet due to bad design, didn't know where to go, what to do, glitches, etc. Double-plus good on that.

CONS:
- Deplorable recycled enemy voice acting during combat. Your enemies will even switch from new voice actors to completely different (old) voice actors if you enter combat. They'll say things like "let's try something different, fall back!" and other various quotes from older Splinter Cell games (Chaos Theory). Tons of them are from the exact same voice actor, which again is from older games and there is not even an attempt to make him sound like a different guy each time. How much effort could it take to get some voice actors into a studio to some new lines. You could get a bum off the street to do this.
- infinite health nonsense like in Call of Duty 2, Gears of War, Rainbow Six Vegas, etc. no med kits, health packs, etc. I don't get this with the new games. It's a revolt against the old Doom health/armor tradition. Logically, it only makes sense if you have some sort of Halo character with a recharging shield or something similar. Sam ain't got that, WWII soldiers certainly didn't, neither do characters in other games - you might be able to give Gears of War a pass because they are wearing some sort of goofy suit in the future, but they really should either explain it (or explain it away) for this and other games. Infinite health changes the context of gameplay. There is no urgency to get to a health kit or be more careful if your health is down. Get shot a bunch of times? Just duck down for a couple of seconds, no prob.
- too many timed missions (entire levels are timed in this game in which you must complete complicated tasks and aren't even able to run - you're forced to walk). It's annoying.
- they took away the light and sound meters in favor of a lame traffic-light Homeland Security style color system. I miss the light and sound meters, they were cool. The color system is also redundant (they have it permanently on screen in 2 different places) -- why not have only 1 color alert (on his shoulder strap) and the light/sound meters for flavor. The light meter allowed you to see when you were APPROACHING vulnerability of exposure. Now they just have a yellow light which indicates only the exact moment of vulnerability, not when you are getting close. The sound meter similarly allowed you to see when you were able to surprise enemies more easily due to loud ambient noise.
- grenade throwing system downgrade. They used to show you an exact arc of where the grenade would land - this was realistic because throwing stuff into an exact location is fairly easy in real life. Even children can do it, so I gather an expert military veteran can do it. Not anymore because it's gone. Why?

Still an excellent game and I'm sure they'll give it a sequel. Chaos Theory was a little better IMO.

If you own an XBOX360, you need to own this game!!!, October 19, 2006

Fun:

Okay let me go on record as saying I LOVE this game so far (about 50% thru) from the stellar graphics to the non linear deep story. Is it the best in the series, THAT is a matter of opinion. I will say however that it IS MY favorite Splinter Cell (SC) to date. And I have played and loved them all, even found joy in the PSP version. But one thing particular makes this one my fave and that is the Story. I will not spoil anything but it is truly engrossing. Now let me follow my normal review format.

Graphics - 5 out of 5 Ubisoft really decided to show true 360 power. OMG! The graphics in this game rank up there with the greats...(FN3,COD3, Oblivion, etc.) may be the best I am still trying to compare. So many details in Sam's wetsuit, backgrounds, and enemies!!! Let me put it like this, you sneak up on your prey, grab him and hold him to interrogate watch his eyes flutter while he spills the beans and then watch his eyes roll to the back of his head when you choke him out. Nuff Said!!!

Sound - 4.5 out of 5 Michael Ironside does the voice acting for Sam, do I really need to go on? The sounds and background music is exactly what you come to expect from the SC series. Turn off everything in the room and turn up the volume you will get sucked in.

Controls - 4 out of 5 Here is my one and only CON, the camera doesn't always like the way you want control Sam, you end up having to toy with the right analog stick a little too much in some situations to see what you want to see. But as far as everything else it flows smoothly and controls pretty much like the others in the series!

Gameplay - 5 out of 5 Okay this is where the game absolutely TAKES off!!! There is just something about sneaking out of the shadows, grabbing and choking your enemies then hiding the bodies, gets me amped!!! But we have already done that right with others in the series right? Well imagine hanging and lowering yourself on a winch Mission Impossible style to obtain access to a certain objective or catch an enemy off guard. Or how about popping out of icy waters grabbing an unsuspecting enemy and dragging him underwater with you to choke him out (without fully getting out of the water). Let me tell you ladies and gentlemen this is STEALTH done absolutely right!! Then on top of the stellar gameplay mechanics. You have options on how to use those gameplay mechanics. Meaning you are a double agent, if you kill your enemies recklessly, leave innocent people to die you get closer to becoming that evil which you are trying to fight against. On the other hand if you choose to save the innocent and take your enemies out sparing their lives, then you uphold that which you have stood for all your years as an NSA agent. Simply put: THIS GAME ROCKS!!

Story - 5 out of 5 I am only about halfway thru this masterpiece and I will not spoil any of what I have experienced thus far I will however tell you that this is so far one of the best story I have experienced in a game. Ending not rated yet...

I will now say that I am a big Splinter Cell fan anyway so this review may come off somewhat Bias. I tried to be as unbiased as possible, but I honestly can not imagine anyone NOT liking this game once they get the hang out the controls and fortunately there are 2 training missions (practice) to help accomplish this. Also let me say that I play my XBOX360 on a 32" Samsung HD TV so when I rate the graphics that is all I have to go by, so I cannot honestly tell anyone how good the graphics look on a regular TV. I cant imagine they would be that much worst though.

Bottom Line: This game is one of the few (so far) for which you purchased an Xbox360...and it is NOT to be missed Trust me!! Let the Holiday Games begin!!!

SIMPSON's Road Rage, a good start for GameCube, February 10, 2002

This is a good game to start off with on Gamecube. I just got my Gamecube and this is the first game I got. I love it. It helps that I am a Simpson's fan but I believe that everybody would like this game. Even if you just watched maybe 2 or 3 episodes. The main part of the game is Road Rage. The goal is to get 1 million $'s. It is really fun because everytime you hit a certain cash goal you win a prize, like a new character or a new starting location. The cool thing is you pick. The other cool part of this game is Mission Mode. There are 10 in all and at the end you win a certain prize(I won't ruin it for u), basically there are different missions such as knocking all of the newspaper stands down and then on the 10th mission you meet Mr.Burns himself. Personally, I like this game a lot. It does have some similarities to Crazy Taxi but in Simpson's there is actually a way to beat the game(getting 1 million $.) In Crazy Taxi there was no way to beat the game. Also, mission mode has almost nothing in common with Taxi. The Head to Head Mode(multiplayer) is also really fun. You can set the goal to 5K, 10k, or 15k. For each person you drop off you get 1k. One of the players picks the person up and tries to get the chararcter to it's destination while the other tries to follow the car and smash into it to steal the passenger. It's very cool. This game does have some bugs to work out like long loading times but it is all worth it. That's why I give it a 4. If I could have I would've put 4 and a half.

Hi-Diddly-Ho There! Ned Flanders at your ser-viddly-ervice!!!

The Game starts out with the Simpsons watching the news and they find out That Homer's boss, C. Montgomery Burns has bought the bus company and has made the buses radioactive. The citizens of Springfield won't stand for it. They are forced to turn their cars into cabs and boycott the buses, while collecting money to buy back the bus comnpany.

This is one awesome game. If you're a big Simpsons fan, like me, you'll love this game. One strange thing about this game is that its just like Crazy Taxi in every way, except there is a primary objective that must be completed to beat the game, (collect a million dollars to buy back the bus company.) You can play with about eighteen characters and play on six levels. As far as game play goes, it is awesome. Graphics are phenominal and another cool thing is that the characters sound and look just as they do on the show. Here are the characters you can play with (their cars and best asset are also listed)

Homer: Family Sedan (All around)
Marge: Convero (All Turning)
Bart: Soap Box Racer (Acceleration)
Lisa: Electric Car (Acceleration)

If you're a Simpsons fan, you will love this game. It's that simple. Real voices, real characters, real Springfield locations, all of them used to best advantage. For example: Marge barrels over Bumble Bee man with her F-Series, and quips, "I hope nobody saw that", or, "My bad". Homer warns his passengers not to sit on his nachos, or complains that he's swallowed his gum. Milhouse complains about swallowing his retainer, and Ralph informs his driver that a leprechaun tells him to burn things. Chief Wiggum is late for a beating, and if you run down poor Gil in the road he'll tell you all about his troubles. Do you see where I'm going? It's the authentic, situation-specific voices and characters (which I've only scratched the surface of) that make this game worthwhile. And combined with simple, fun controls and five or six huge Springfield neighborhoods, a Simpson fan will be forced to admit that he or she would have willingly paid a lot more for the experience. And if you're not a Simpsons fan, and are simply looking for a taxi sim, no problem. This is the one. Crazy Taxi is weak compared to this game--confusing controls, 2 whole neighborhoods to roam through, pedestrians that always seem to jump out of the way at the last instant, and a minimum of breakables...why waste the money? In contrast, mail boxes and shopping carts and light posts are commonly seen flying through the air in downtown and residential Springfield, and when you hit somebody, like the Sea Captain or Mayor Quimby or Principal Skinner, you both feel it. I'm a Simpsons fan, and I can honestly say that I can find nothing wrong with this game. Bottom line: you will not regret adding it to your Gamecube library. A worthy purchase.

I spent too much time reading this book, getting to two pages one day, ten on the next, putting it away for a week. This was a mistake. One Good Turn takes one twist of fate from five or six points of view and pulls together a story drafted with a deft command of the Queen's tongue (I do mean ENGLISH) and lovely divergent backstories and character development pieces. It's a mystery wrapped in a Jane Austin novel strung together with pearls.

One auto accident brings several main characters together on journeys that lead the reader into the mystery of the Honda Man, a road raging thug who clubs another driver in clear view of several witnesses. Ms. Atkinson stammers the time frame to allow the participating characters to ramp up to the accident, and my stop-start reading of this book made the story difficult to follow. I heartily recommend no more than a few sittings of extended reading to fully absorb the action. This is no standard issue action novel, so it's a bit of genre bender where the adventure is sluced with plenty of prose. Enjoy.

Some people would think any series would die out after four titles, especially a golf game with two titles on the same system but after playing a demo of this and reading about it, its almost like a whole new game with many features makeing it worth buying. First of lets get started with the graphic/sound improvments. Hot shots golf three had great picture and sound but hot shots golf fore has considerable imporvement over those. The graphics are stunning with beutiful backgrounds and well drawn characters. The caracters are a little cartoonish but thats the way there supposed to be in hot shots golf. The sound is great from the plop of the ball when it hits the water to the bounce of the ball when it hits the fariway.

Now lets talk about the new things they added. The most considerable notice is the much more wide selection of courses and characters. Theres an upgrade from the five courses in hot shots golf three to thirteen thats right thirteen courses (includeing the five from hot shots golf three revamped a little of course). Also theres a huge new selction of characters theres now 24 golfers to choose from (one is an animal the rest are humans) and theres now ten diffrent caddies (two are animals i know one of the animal caddies is a panda bear but im not sure about the other). Thats a HUGE new selction compared to what there was to choose from in hot shots golf three. Also new and one of the most exciteing features is the online tourniments were you can test your golfing skills with up to 31 players in an online tourniment exciteing eh? Also another big new feature, the return of putt putt golf. But its not your normal putt putt your up in the air or in crazy locations shooting shots that ricochet off of rocks or haveing to hit over narrow bridges with no rails on the sides! Your rewarded points in putt putt for the length of your shot and how many shots it takes to get in the hole. You can also play two player putt putt witch will be fun to challenger your putting skills.

Lastly ill discuss the improvments in gameplay. The gameplay is enough the same to please old time players but slightly different to please them as well. It still goes by the three click method (press to get started press for length and press again for how straight and how much of the ditance youll get, easier done then said) but has different characters with different ways of hitting and new items to buy to customize the way you golf to make things different. Also theres a new easy mode where theres no third click so you always hit what you mean to for those newbies comeing into the game. Although it dose take a major challenge out of the game. With the new courses and characters it makes it a little funnier to play on new courses that present a new challenge or play as a different character to make a course easier or harder. With so many characters theres a character thats just right for one course and another just wrong for that same course. The gameplay is great maybe the best in any golf game and must be expreinced at least by renting the game. All in all this game is great it manages to keep its old glory that people love yet add new things people are sure to want to see improved or added in yet another sequel.
